Behind your sparkles

Magic maker

Hi I'm Taylor

The mischief-maker & creative mind of Indigo Finery: juggling photography, admin, design, finances, social media, and the enchantment of manufacturing.

Despite being a bit of an introvert, I’ve found my voice in crafting beautiful jewellery that I believe speaks volumes.

How it all began

My journey into jewellery-making wasn’t exactly a straight path. My story begins after finishing school, when I pursued a Graphic Design degree (because who doesn’t love a good canvas, right?). After graduation, I wandered through a few creative avenues – dabbling in tattooing and piercing (yes, really) – before landing my first job in graphic design. Fast forward a few years, and there I was, in my dream job within the wedding industry, crafting enchanting stationery for lovebirds. I lived for the magical moment when a design would leap from the page and transform into something real – something tangible. There’s a thrill in seeing a doodle become someone’s dream day come to life!

Then, like the villain in every fairytale, COVID showed up, and with it, the beloved wedding industry crumbled. The company I had given my all to, shut its doors after nearly 20 years, and I found myself adrift. But, in true fairytale style, just when the dragons are closing in, a mysterious door appears. For me, that door led to the world of jewellery.

As fate would have it, I stumbled upon a jewellery-manufacturing course and felt that old spark of magic return. Instead of paper cuts, I found myself dealing with metal shavings and molten silver. I’ll admit, creating something from scratch – shaping metal, selecting stones, and watching it all come together – felt like I was performing alchemy. It was an entirely new kind of magic, and I was hooked. My first creation? A piece for my mother – poorly made, but practically glowing with the love I poured into it. I knew (well, sort of knew) that I had found my next adventure.

A journey of time and chance

This journey into jewellery came with an unexpected gift: time. Time to be with my family, time to take walks on the beach with my parents, time to sit in waiting rooms at doctors’ offices (less magical, but still important), and time to garden when the daily grind gets a little too… grindy.

My father, diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer at just 52, has been fighting like a knight in shining armour – taking on each day with strength and spirit. The time I’ve spent with him, and with my family, is a treasure I wouldn’t trade for all the jewels in the world.

Inspired by women before me

As I look back, I realise that my love for jewellery has been gently brewing all along, thanks to two magical women: my mother and my granny. When I was young, they would let me wear their costume jewellery, as if I were a princess in a treasure trove. They’d whisk me away on their shopping trips, where gemstones and jewels glittered like secret spells waiting to be cast. They’d show me the precious, sentimental pieces bought by the men in their lives – my father and oupa – and with those pieces came stories, whispers of love, memories, and magic. I was mesmerised by the way the colours danced, how different gemstones sang together in harmony, and how each piece seemed to hold a world of its own.

My mother, the queen of a “pop of colour,” was never without a little splash of vibrancy in her outfits – whether it was her nails, her clothing, or her jewellery. She could turn the simplest day into something extraordinary with just a glint of colour, and though I didn’t realise it then, those moments of flair and sparkle have stayed with me. Now, as I find myself immersed in the jewellery industry, I often daydream about those cherished memories and how these magical women shaped my love for beautiful things.

Why Indigo Finery?

The name comes from the song “Indigo Girl” by Watershed – a song my dad and I hold close to our hearts. Naming my first financial “baby” after something so personal felt right. Plus, much like I’ve been a (lovingly) expensive addition to his life, so too, has Indigo Finery, been to mine. Thanks, Dad!

The team behind the scenes

I couldn’t do any of this without my wonderful support crew. My parents, though they come from corporate worlds, never dulled my creative spark as a child; they encouraged the three-year-old in me who wanted every colour of crayon imaginable. Their support continues to this day.

Running Indigo Finery is really a family affair: it’s me, our fur babies, and a loving cheer squad who keep me going. Snowie, our fluffy malamute girl; Jaxon, our playful Rottweiler; Jessie, our little kangaroo jumper with stubby legs who insists on sleeping on her dad’s pillow; and our newest rescue, Ozzy, a tiny labrador-like cuddle enthusiast. Alongside my furry crew & parents, my husband, granny & brother all pitch in as unpaid (but endlessly appreciated) helpers, offering advice, encouragement, and moral support. They’re the quiet magic behind every piece I create.
